Dozens turned out Thursday afternoon for the official ribbon-cutting at the new DeKalb County Jail expansion…and citizens will be able to tour the new building all through the weekend.
The $36 million project adds space for 57 prisoners, along with up-to-date facilities; security cameras are installed all over, secured cells are in place for various levels of security, and dedicated kitchen and laundry facilities are joined by on-site medical and dental services for use by inmates.
Those going through the jail will not only see a more secure and ergonomically-usable environment, but they’ll observe break rooms and office space for jail staff which have had to work in cramped conditions at the old jail for decades.
There’s also shell space available for future expansion, which would more than double the capacity of the new wing of the jail; current cells remain in use, and the new ones won’t be occupied until July.
Tours will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
